Total Time:11 minutes
Yield:2 servings 1x
Ingredients
Scale
2 tuna steaks (ahi or bigeye), about 6-8 ounces each and 1 inch thick
1/4 cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
2 tablespoons mirin (sweet rice wine)
1 tablespoon sake (rice wine) or dry sherry (optional)
1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
Sesame seeds and chopped green onions, for garnish
Instructions
Prepare the Teriyaki Marinade: In a shallow dish or zip-top bag, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, sake (if using), honey or maple syrup, rice vinegar, grated ginger, minced garlic, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes (if using).
Marinate the Tuna: Place the tuna steaks in the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes. Do not marinate for longer than 30 minutes, as the acidity can start to ‘cook’ the fish.
Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
Prepare the Tuna for Air Frying: Remove the tuna steaks from the marinade, allowing any excess to drip off.
Air Fry the Tuna: Place the tuna steaks in the preheated air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they are not touching.
Cook to Perfection: Air fry for 4-6 minutes, depending on the thickness of the steaks and your desired level of doneness. For rare to medium-rare, cook for 4 minutes. For medium, cook for 5 minutes. For medium-well, cook for 6 minutes.
Rest: Remove the tuna steaks from the air fryer and let them rest for 2-3 minutes before slicing.
Garnish and Serve: Slice the tuna steaks against the grain and garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve immediately.
